It has gotten to the point where you could buy the company for a very specific asset and discard the rest because of the cash. That is pretty amazing for a ~$12 billion company.

MySQL yes but then you’re in the support business more than you’re in the DB business. Java on the other hand has turned out like NFS, other people have built fortunes on it Sun not being one of them.Should a company like BEA have even existed? No, Sun should have owned that space but they couldn’t seal the deal and BEA made a ton of money on the back of Java until the tide turned and the company fell over dead.

Andy B. has left (again) and more than 20% of the company is owned by an asset management firm. This the the death rattle, they can’t survive this down turn.
